A mayor in Venezuela is marking homes with red symbols to indicate that someone inside has Covid-19. In addition, he is threatening to cut welfare payments for anyone that breaks his curfew rules.
The mayor of the Sucre municipality in Yaracuy state, Luis Duque, says the need for a white paper sign with a red circle and line drawn through is clear. “We are protecting our people,” he has reportedly said. Duque is a member of Nicolas Maduro’s Socialist Party.
“This indicates that there is a Covid case or a suspected Covid case, so the people are alert,” Duque said in a social media post according to Reuters.
Members of the Venezuelan opposition are accusing Duque of discrimination.
Venezuela is experiencing a resurgence in cases, with 1526 new cases and 15 deaths reported on Tuesday.
