You can’t make it up.
The “guardians” of human rights in the world are China, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela…and, soon enough; The United States of America.
You read that correctly. We’re about to join the club.
Though the Trump administration chose to leave the so-called United Nation’s “Human Rights Council” due to the hypocrisy of the countries running it, the Biden Administration is on a path to sanction the Council once again.
On Monday, the State Department reported that President Biden is ordering the U.S. to reengage “immediately and robustly ” with the U.N. Human Rights Council.
This is a mistake.
The Council has no credibility. After all, when major human rights abusers–like China and Cuba–are leading your pack…you might question want to question whether your values are really aligned.
Nikki Haley, a one-time Ambassador to the U.N., has said that the U.S.’s commitment to human rights “does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights.”
She’s right.
The U.S. needs to stand up for our values. Countries like China and Cuba and others that engage in massive human rights violations effectively insult and mock actual human rights.
Instead of joining the Coucil, the U.S. would be better served by establishing its own Human Rights Council and inviting member states that actually abide by real human rights policies that we set forth to join.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo got it right when he described the U.N.’s commission as a “bully pulpit for human rights violators.” He referred to the council as a “haven for dictators and the democracies that indulge them.”
Though the U.S. is only going to engage in “observer” status initially, the Biden Administration will seek on of three member seats later this year, according to AP.
Is this an example of “if you can’t beat them, join them” kind of approach?
We’re better than that and we should be setting an example for the rest of the world.
The integrity of the United States and all that we stand for on human rights is at stake. This is not a time to submit to the likes dictators and human rights violators.
