The 6 Movies Disney Plus is Pulling From Its Children’s Section For Insensitive Content

Disney Plus is pulling some popular children’s movies from its children’s lineup (accessible by kids) amid concerns that these movies depict racist and/or politically insensitive moments. Some of the most noted films to be pulled include:

  1. Peter Pan

Concerns about stereotypical depiction of Indians including the song, “What makes the red man red” is causing Disney to limit young children’s ability to view the film. The movie is considered a classic and was made in 1953.

2. Dumbo

Dumbo is another popular Disney film about an elephant that overcomes massive hurdles to become the star of the show as a flying elephant. It was made in 1941 and, according the Disney’s “Stories Matter” section of its website, the crows in the movie are seen as playing homage to minstrel shows in which whites would put on black makeup and ridicule enslaved black Americans.

3. The Aristocats

The Aristocats is a classic story about two cats from “different sides of the tracks” falling in love. O’Malley the alley cat has a group of friends that are jazz musicians. In one scene, he introduces Duchess,  the beloved cat of a famous and very rich retired opera singer, to his friends. One of the cats is siamese and, according to Disney, is “depicted as a racist caricature of East Asian peoples with exaggerated stereotypical traits such as slanted eyes and buck teeth. He sings in poorly accented English by a white actor and plays the piano with chopsticks.”

4. Swiss Family Robinson

Swiss Family Robinson is a Disney film from 1960 and an attraction at the Disney Orlando theme park. The film tells the story of a family left to fend for itself on a deserted island. According to Disney, “the pirates who antagonize the family are portrayed as a stereotypical foreign menace. Many appear in ‘yellow face’ or ‘brown face’ and are costumed in an exaggerated or inaccurate manner.”

Additional film removals include Lady and the Tramp and The Jungle Book.

6. The Jungle Book

In 2019, the company placed a warning on these films. Now, Disney is removing them from children’s profiles for available content. The warning for adults will still exist.

The follows a recent uptick in various kinds of censure. TCM recently announced it will examine 18 of its classic films including Breakfast at Tiffany’s, My Fair Lady and Gone With the Wind, while Dr. Seuss books have recently come under fire as the NEA distances itself from the once celebrated author and school districts instruct teachers not to promote or read Dr. Seuss books.
