Two Democratic women have let Democratic leadership know they will not necessarily fall into line with President Joe Biden’s agenda.
Former Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard blasted Biden for his speech calling opponents of his voting law racists, comparing it to Hillary Clinton’s “deplorables” moment.
“Hillary’s calling tens of millions of Americans deplorables was divisive & disgusting,” Gabbard wrote on Twitter. “But Biden has gone further, calling those who disagree with his actions & policies domestic enemies, traitors, and racists. Biden promised to unite us, but he is doing all he can do divide us.”
Those remarks came along with a rebuke from Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., another member of Biden’s party who also shut down his attempt to axe the filibuster to push through his voting law.
Her speech deflated any hopes Biden had of ending the filibuster anytime soon.
“There’s no need for me to restate my longstanding support for the 60-vote threshold to pass legislation,” Sinema said in her speech this week. “There’s no need for me to restate its role in protecting our country from wild reversals of federal policy. This week’s harried discussions about Senate rules are but a poor substitute for what I believe could have and should have been a thoughtful public debate at any time over the past year.”
