Alex Murdaugh Guilty of Murdering Wife and Son

It took less than three hours of deliberation for the jury to reach its decision in the Alex Murdaugh case. Murdaugh was found guilty of brutally murdering his wife and son.

54-year-old Murdaugh, a former attorney, shot dead his wife, Maggie, 52, and their son, Paul, 22, at the family’s South Carolina hunting estate on the evening of June 7, 2021.

Murdaugh, a disbarred attorney, originally lied to the police about his whereabouts on that evening in June. Last week, he decided to take the stand in an attempt to convince the jurors that his opioid addiction made him paranoid.

The State argued that he killed his wife and son in an attempt to distract from the millions he had stolen from his law firm. The trial lasted six weeks.

Murdaugh will be sentenced on Friday at 9:30 am. Judge Clifton Newman told the Collation County Courthouse in Walterboro that the minimum sentence on the homicide charges is “30 years and the maximum is life imprisonment.”
